Powerus Guardian: How a Low-Cost Interceptor With Ukrainian Roots Is Changing Counter-Drone Defense

Powerus is expanding Guardian production in the UAE and other markets. The Iran war, Ukraine’s battlefield experience and the economics of cheap interception are reshaping how countries think about air defense.

Modern air defense has acquired an economic problem that accuracy alone cannot solve. If an attacking drone costs tens of thousands of dollars while the missile used to destroy it costs millions, a defender can win every individual engagement and still lose a prolonged war of attrition by exhausting its stockpiles.

That arithmetic is the opportunity behind Florida-based Powerus. Its Guardian is a small, high-speed interceptor designed primarily to destroy Shahed- and Geran-type drones. The company lists speeds of roughly 290 to 340 kilometres per hour, a range of up to 15 kilometres and a weight of 2.65 kilograms including its battery.

Only recently, Powerus could have been regarded as one more American defense-technology start-up promising to adapt faster and manufacture more cheaply than traditional contractors. By August 2026, the proposition had become more substantial: US military work, production in the Gulf and plans for an international manufacturing network.

The war involving Iran accelerated that transition. Repeated missile and drone attacks against Gulf states demonstrated how rapidly relatively inexpensive weapons could impose enormous costs on sophisticated air-defense systems and civilian infrastructure. For the United Arab Emirates, interceptor availability became an industrial as well as a military problem.

Daycom’s analysis indicates that the significance of the Powerus Guardian extends beyond the performance of one aircraft. What is emerging is a different model of defense production: battlefield technology refined in Ukraine, commercialised by an American company and manufactured close to the regions where large numbers may suddenly be required.

Guardian grew out of lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war, where massed Shahed attacks forced defenders to search for weapons that could be produced and fired at comparable scale. Powerus explicitly markets the Guardian family against Shahed and Geran drones and says its systems have already accumulated hundreds of successful interceptions.

The company’s own origins are tied to Ukraine. Future Powerus executives travelled there with humanitarian supplies after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 and encountered the rapidly expanding role of unmanned systems. The business later sought out Ukrainian technology that had already been tested under combat conditions.

The basic concept is straightforward: instead of launching a multimillion-dollar missile at an inexpensive drone, send another drone to destroy it. In the Guardian-1 model, an operator receives targeting information, launches the interceptor, steers it toward the threat and conducts a kinetic engagement once the target is located.

Later versions are intended to reduce the operator’s workload. Guardian-2 incorporates automated radar cueing and semi-autonomous flight while keeping a human in the engagement chain. Guardian-3 is being developed as a more autonomous system, part of the broader industry push toward faster machine-assisted interception.

This is where the economics become striking. According to reporting provided by The New York Times, a Guardian costs about $5,000. It is not a universal air-defense missile, but against relatively inexpensive one-way attack drones that price could dramatically improve the ratio between what an attacker spends and what a defender must spend.

A direct comparison with Patriot would nevertheless be misleading. Guardian cannot perform the mission of a PAC-3 interceptor against ballistic missiles or other highly demanding targets. Its purpose is to remove the lower tier of threats so that scarce, sophisticated missiles can be reserved for weapons that genuinely require them.

In a layered defense network, Guardian is therefore a complement rather than a substitute for systems such as Patriot. The more Shaheds that can be destroyed by drones, guns or electronic warfare, the fewer expensive missiles must be consumed against threats that were designed partly to exhaust the defender economically.

The same pressure is reshaping the largest defense companies. Lockheed Martin has announced a lower-cost PAC-3 ACE interceptor developed with international production in mind. It remains a much more sophisticated and expensive weapon than Guardian, but its existence reflects the same conclusion: cost per engagement has become a central performance metric.

For Powerus, however, the more disruptive experiment may be manufacturing rather than aerodynamics. In the UAE, the company is using existing industrial capacity rather than building a dedicated American factory from scratch and exporting completed interceptors across thousands of kilometres.

The production model described by The New York Times relies on a local contract manufacturer supplied with Powerus components, software and training. Workers assemble modular parts, some produced with 3D printing, in a system deliberately designed to be easier to reproduce than a traditional missile-production line.

The Emirati facility has reportedly been producing roughly 30 interceptors a day, with a near-term ambition of reaching about 100. That number is modest beside the output of a mature automobile plant, but significant for a defense system whose value depends on being available in the thousands rather than in small strategic inventories.

This reverses a familiar American arms-export model. Traditionally, complex weapons are manufactured at specialised US plants and then shipped to approved customers. Powerus is trying to export not merely the finished weapon but the ability to manufacture it locally while retaining the underlying technology, software and integration framework.

The company presents different production figures depending on the part of the network being described. Its own Guardian material has cited capacity of around 1,000 units a month with plans to reach 5,000, while wider reporting has put affiliated output near 3,000 and a global target of 15,000 a month by mid-2027.

Those figures require caution. Manufacturing capacity is not the same thing as sustained deliveries to customers, and a young defense company still has to demonstrate that it can obtain electronics, maintain quality and keep multiple production lines operating for months under wartime demand rather than during an initial expansion phase.

Commercial contracts are nevertheless beginning to appear. Powerus announced a Middle Eastern agreement worth roughly $22.3 million for protecting oil and gas infrastructure. The first stage focuses heavily on detection, tracking, classification and warning systems, with an architecture capable of integrating interceptors later.

That distinction is important because Guardian by itself is not an air-defense network. A cheap interceptor is useful only if radars, optical sensors, communications links and command software can identify the threat quickly enough and place the weapon in the correct part of the sky at the correct moment.

Powerus is therefore moving toward a broader sensor-to-effector architecture. The commercial logic is not simply to sell a flying projectile, but to combine detection, classification, decision-making and interception. That systems approach also allows different weapons to be selected for different categories of airborne threat.

The Gulf is an obvious market for such a model. After sustained attacks, regional governments have another reason to pursue domestic manufacturing: even a dependable foreign supplier cannot guarantee unlimited ammunition when several wars begin drawing simultaneously from the same production lines.

For the UAE, sovereign production is therefore more than an industrial-policy slogan. The country can continue buying high-end American systems while also building cheaper interceptors at home. Local assembly offers a larger stockpile, shorter repair chains and greater control over replenishment during a prolonged crisis.

Powerus is taking the same idea to India, where it has pursued manufacturing cooperation with local defense industry. New Delhi has spent years trying to reduce dependence on imported weapons, and counter-drone systems are especially suited to localisation because hardware and software can evolve faster than conventional procurement cycles.

The trend is not confined to start-ups. Major Western contractors are increasingly discussing co-production and regional manufacturing. Four years of intense warfare in Ukraine, followed by new Middle Eastern demand, have exposed the vulnerability of relying on one plant on one continent for a munition consumed in large numbers.

Powerus also has an unusual corporate story. In March, it announced a proposed merger with Aureus Greenway Holdings, a publicly traded company whose existing operations centred on golf properties in Florida. The combined company is intended to operate under the Powerus name once the transaction is completed.

The deal brought another layer of scrutiny because Dominari Securities helped broker it. Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump have financial and advisory links to Dominari Holdings, and regulatory filings have identified the president’s sons among investors connected with the structure surrounding the proposed combination.

The merger had not been fully completed by late July. Regulatory filings continued to describe it as a proposed transaction subject to conditions, even as Aureus changed its stock-market ticker in anticipation of the combination. That distinction matters amid intense investor enthusiasm for rapidly growing defense-technology companies.

Powerus has other connections to figures close to the current US administration. Retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, who served in senior Trump administration roles and worked on Ukraine policy, joined the company’s advisory board, adding both military experience and political visibility to the start-up.

Another link involves Unusual Machines, a Florida drone-component company whose advisory board includes Donald Trump Jr. It invested $30 million in Powerus after developing a commercial relationship in which components were being supplied for counter-UAS systems produced by the defense company.

Those connections inevitably raise questions about access and conflicts of interest, particularly when the business is also pursuing federal defense contracts. But the publicly available record does not establish that Powerus obtained military work because of political influence. Connections and proof of improper procurement are not the same thing.

The company’s most visible US government breakthrough is an Air Force IDIQ contract awarded through its Tandem Defense subsidiary, with a maximum ceiling of $90 million. The structure is important: $90 million represents the potential upper limit of orders under the vehicle, not money automatically guaranteed to Powerus.

That difference is frequently lost in the excitement surrounding defense start-ups. An IDIQ contract creates a route for future orders, but actual revenue depends on what the government later buys. Powerus still has to prove its industrial scale through repeat production, field performance and sustained customer demand.

The military challenge will also keep moving. Russia and Iran are developing faster drones, new navigation methods and more complex attack profiles. Jet-powered variants and combined salvos involving drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles could make an interceptor optimised for today’s Shahed less effective against tomorrow’s threat.

Ukraine has already demonstrated the underlying rule of drone warfare: technological advantages are temporary. A new aircraft produces a new countermeasure; that countermeasure produces a new tactic. The speed at which software, sensors and manufacturing can change may therefore matter as much as the specifications of the first version.

Future air defense increasingly looks less like a single extraordinarily capable battery and more like a stack of different layers. Electronic warfare, mobile guns, lasers, interceptor drones, cheaper missiles and premium systems must all be matched to targets according to both military danger and economic logic.

That is where Guardian may matter more as an industrial example than as an individual product. Its central promise is not that a $5,000 drone can replace Patriot. The promise is that Patriot should not have to be used when a much cheaper interceptor is capable of solving the problem.

For American defense manufacturing, the experiment is also about geography. Ukraine and the Middle East have shown the weakness of supply chains in which critical weapons are made at a limited number of sites and then transported across oceans before reaching the countries that are consuming them.

Powerus proposes distributed factories, regional contractors and production near the customer while keeping core American software and system architecture. That approach creates risks involving quality control and technology protection, but it could make output far easier to expand once a crisis has already begun.

For Ukraine, there is another dimension to the story. Solutions born from the pressure of Russian Shahed attacks are being transformed into American products, assembled in the Gulf and prepared for broader global sales. The war has effectively turned Ukraine into one of the world’s most consequential laboratories for counter-drone technology.

Powerus remains a young company with ambitious production claims, an unconventional corporate path and a scale that still needs to be demonstrated through sustained deliveries. But the industrial direction it represents is already larger than one start-up: manufacturing speed is beginning to rival technical sophistication as a measure of military power.

Drone warfare has changed the question governments ask weapons makers. It is no longer enough to know whether a system can destroy a target. They also need to know how many interceptions can be afforded in a single night, how many weapons can be built next month and how quickly another production line can be opened.

Guardian is a bet on that new arithmetic. If the Powerus model survives the test of real production and combat demand, its most important achievement may not be another fast interceptor but a shift toward air defense in which thousands of inexpensive weapons preserve the rare, costly missiles for the threats that truly require them.
