The number of casualties from the Russian strike on the Sonyachna Halereya shopping complex in Kryvyi Rih has risen sharply. According to the latest update from Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s Defence Council, two people were killed and another 52 were injured.
Six children are among those hurt. Vilkul said 20 of the wounded were in serious condition and had been taken into operating rooms. Emergency and rescue operations at the site were continuing, meaning the final casualty toll could still change.
The latest figures mark a significant increase from the first reports after the attack. Authorities initially said one person had been killed and 12 injured, before revising the toll to two dead and 15 wounded. As rescue and medical operations continued, the scale of the attack became substantially clearer.
Daycom’s preliminary analysis of verified open-source reports indicates that the rapid rise in the number of injured reflects the continuing search of the damaged building, the evacuation of people from the site and the arrival of additional casualties at hospitals.
A fire broke out inside the shopping complex after the strike. Emergency crews launched a large-scale rescue operation, with medical and other response teams working at the scene. Local authorities had warned from the outset that many people were inside the building and that casualty figures were likely to be revised.
The final toll has not yet been established. Rescue work remains under way and doctors are treating the most seriously wounded. Further official updates are expected on the condition of those hospitalised and on the extent of damage to the shopping complex.
